Project Porchlight’s Shrewsbury Blitz on September 18 was a terrific success. A diverse group of more than 30 volunteers gathered at the Shrewsbury Historical Society [1] in Shrewsbury, New Jersey, for an informative training session. After that, they worked their way through the borough, educating their neighbors about the energy savings offered by compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs as well as the energy efficiency programs that are available through New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program (NJCEP) [2].

A total of 566 CFL bulbs were distributed during the Blitz, part of Project Porchlight New Jersey’s campaign to distribute energy-efficient light bulbs to residents across the state. Project Porchlight is an initiative of One Change [3], and the campaign is made possible thanks to funding by the state Board of Public Utilities (BPU) [4] and the NJCEP [5].

“The Blitz went really well,” says Shrewsbury resident Deidre DerAsadourian, who helped organize the distribution. “A lot of our volunteers were younger kids from Brownie troops, and I think people were really happy to hear about energy conservation from the younger kids. And it was a great experience for the kids—it was wonderful for them to learn a little bit about protecting the environment.”

CFL bulbs use up to 75 percent less energy than old-fashioned incandescent bulbs. Choosing CFL bulbs means lower costs, reduced demand for electricity, and, ultimately, less pollution.

When it comes to protecting our environment, simple actions really do matter! Even something as simple as changing a light bulb can make a difference. By connecting with state residents one at a time, Project Porchlight is empowering people of all backgrounds to make smart, energy-efficient choices that protect the environment.

“Project Porchlight is a fantastic campaign,” says Diedre. “It is so wonderful to give everyone an opportunity to try this new technology and get them comfortable with it. The hope is that some folks will change the rest of their light bulbs, too, so the impact will be even greater.”
