Glen Trites of Senator Myles Venne School [1] has been teaching the Grade 10 Energy and Mines course for six years. Part of the program’s mandate is to explore how we can reduce energy consumption, and to examine alternative energy sources.

“We have come to the conclusion that there will not be a huge breakthrough in the energy fields that will miraculously meet all our needs,” says Glen. Instead, he explains, he and his students believe that “if everyone did one or two small things, then together it will amount to a big thing.”

When Glen received a Project Porchlight brochure with his SaskPower [2] bill this summer, he was delighted to see we were promoting a campaign that revolves around the belief that “simple actions matter.” He and his students enthusiastically volunteered to deliver 1,250 CFLs throughout the communities of La Ronge, Air Ronge and Lac La Ronge Indian Band earlier this November.

“Sometimes people ignore problems in our society because… it seems to be too large to do anything at all,” says Glen. “Project Porchlight helped (local residents) become aware that they could do something… It was quite significant to our community.”
