Thousands of Bellevue, WA residents came out to celebrate the community’s annual Strawberry Festival June 27 and 28. Project Porchlight staff took the opportunity to introduce ourselves and recruit volunteers for our upcoming campaigns in the Puget Sound area, as well as for partner Puget Sound Energy’s Rock the Bulb campaign and Be an Energy Rock Star Contest.
The Bellevue Strawberry Festival is one of the city’s most popular events. It offers something for people of all ages—historical displays, musical entertainment and automobile shows for the adults; face painting, clowns and carousels for the children; and plenty of delicious treats for everyone, including mouth-watering strawberry shortcakes.
All the exciting activities really put people in a good mood! Countless festival attendees stopped by the Project Porchlight booth (pictured here with Events Coordinator Anna Cronin in charge). We signed up more than 50 volunteers for our upcoming community blitzes and Rock the Bulb campaign! People were keen to learn about the campaign, and walked away happy with their free buttons and temporary tattoos. One of the highlights of the weekend was helping some of the younger volunteers put on their new tattoos—after strawberry shortcake eating contests and bouncing castles, few things delight children as much as getting a new (fake) tattoo to show off to their parents!
Volunteer Coordinator Galen Benshoof couldn’t be happier with the way the weekend turned out. “The Bellevue Strawberry Festival was a fantastic way to introduce ourselves to the community and begin to share the message that simple actions matter,” says Galen. “We recruited some really enthusiastic volunteers, and I’m looking forward to working with them in the coming months.”
