Project Porchlight staff Jane Baker and Heather Hood are well into their trek across northern BC. And they’ve met some interesting characters along the way.
On a recent stop to refresh at Liard River Hotsprings, Jane ran into fellow soakers Norma, Patrick and Richard, who were pretty excited to hear that they’d be receiving free CFLs later this month. Richard, a statistician, was impressed to learn that if everyone in Canada exchanged just incandescent light bulb for a CFL, it would be the equivalent of taking 66,000 cars off the road. The three promised to spread the word as soon as they towelled off.
Further down the road, Jane and Heather stumbled upon some buffalo who were enjoying the afternoon sun from a comfortable spot in the middle of the highway. Once the animals moved on, Jane and Heather continued their journey, safely admiring the bears they drove by from the safety of their car.
As if they hadn’t seen enough wildlife for one day, the Porchlight troopers happened upon an unusual sign along the highway: “SLOW. Sasquatch Crossing. Sitings (sic) Daily.” Intrigued, Jane and Heather pulled over at the next town to enquire. Turns out the local gas station is called Sasquatch Crossing. After the bears and buffalo, the ladies were half expecting to find a real sasquatch pumping gas!
After a long day of travel and adventure, the two made it back to camp safe and sound, and with all their light bulbs in tact. Stay tuned for more tales from the great North.
